Yield Potential
We recognize that optimal yields are achieved when a complete annual farm plan is created and systematically adhered to. Additionally, good agricultural practices (ex. limiting tillage, selecting and properly applying the right herbicides, using proper seeding rates and depth, applying appropriate starter fertilizers, splitting nitrogen applications, etc.) can all increase yields substantially, but only if these farm operations are implemented when soil conditions are suitable.
Improving drainage, properly adjusting pH, and improving cationic balance can be done relatively easily (though at some cost) and will substantially improve yield averages during the first few seasons after initial implementation. Challenges associated with erosion, limited topsoil depth, and low organic matter may take longer to overcome and will generally require cover crop adoption. The type and magnitude of soil qualities currently limiting yields will affect the rate and magnitude of yield response observed after System adoption.
Over-reliance and inefficient use of N, P, and K fertilizers by many farmers have significantly reduced net financial returns. Farmers who have historically over-applied these macronutrients, especially nitrogen, will likely see net returns improve the most along with modest yield increases on a 5-year rolling average. Those who already split nitrogen fertilizer applications and use foliar fertilizers properly may see smaller differences initially. However, once an understanding of how the System boosts root growth and the importance of micro-nutrient availability is reached, greater improvements in nutrient use efficiency will be achieved.
